Saturday April 28th, Danny had to go to Children's Hospital because he had Pneumonia caused by the RSV virus. He also had Hemophilus. Danny was able to come home one week later, on Saturday May 5th.

Children's Hospital is on the southwest edge of downtown Saint Paul. They are a very nice hospital for kids. Danny and Eddie were both born at Children's Hospital. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, where Danny stayed from Saturday to Wednesday, gave him excellent care. They have nice facilities for families, too. Betty was able to stay in a private sleeping room only 100 feet or so away from Danny's room. They had a suite of such rooms available for families with kids in the PICU. This is provided at no cost to the patient's family.  Betty's room was sponsored by Deluxe Check's Foundation.  The area also had private bathrooms and showers, a refridgerator, laundry facilities, and a common room for watching TV, eating, and so forth. It was sort of like a college dormitory.

Danny had to go to the hospital because he was not breathing well enough. He was working very hard to breath, but his O2 level was still not where it should be. And he was not going to be able to keep breathing as hard as he was. So he was put on a respirator, a machine that would do his breathing for him. The doctors put a tube through his nose and down to his lung area, that would provide him with enough O2 and without him having to work for it. This way his body could work on fighting the RSV virus and the Hemophilus.

Here is a picture of Danny at the PICU. The machines at the left regulated the flow of his various medicines. Danny was being given several drugs to keep him sleeping most of the time and also to keep him from moving around -- so he would not remove the tubes and monitoring wires. While in the PICU, Danny had his own private nurse 24 hours a day.

Here is another picture of Danny at PICU. After a few days they brought him a nice little toy aquarium.

As Danny's condition improved, they would cut back on the drugs enough to let him wake up from time to time. Here we see Danny with his eyes open a bit. You can also see that he is no longer on the respirator, he just has some O2 going to his nose. They keep reducing the level of O2 in the tube until he no longer needs it and can get the proper level on his own.

Mom is happy to be able to hold Danny again. While he was in the PICU he had to stay in bed the whole time.

Here is a nice little park which is just outside the emergency room doors at Children's. One of the trees in this area has a plaque showing that it was dedicated to a doctor that was Ed's pediatrician.
